Shiatsu For Common complaints: Neck, Shoulder & Arm — 8 hours
Shiatsu literally means “finger pressure”. It is an ancient Japanese bodywork form that incorporates compression, rocking, friction, percussion, and stretching to open the flow of the channels (meridians) and bring balance to the body’s systems. It is relaxing and invigorating, and can be adapted to work with a wide array of potential clients. The work is done over clothes, which makes shiatsu a perfect base for onsite work. In this class we will focus on the yang channels of the back, neck, shoulder, and arm, their relationship to the yin channels in the area, and to the rest of the person. We will explore techniques in prone, side-lying, supine, and seated positions for bringing relief to common complaints in the area.
Body Mechanics — 4 hours
This course will address body mechanics for practitioners of all types, from the application of compressive forces to positioning and comfort during lighter touch modalities. Good body mechanics will allow the practitioner to be comfortable and to work with a minimum amount of effort throughout a long career. When the practitioner is most comfortable, the quality of their touch will be at its very best – resulting in many returning clients and referrals for a successful practice. When the practitioner is truly working without effort, the sensitivity of their touch is at the highest level – taking the practitioner into a deeper understanding of the work that they do and its effect on their clients. These should be goals of the highest priority for bodyworkers across all modalities.
Ethics — 4 hours
Ethics is the study of moral principal and appropriate conduct. The overall purpose of ethics is to guide professional practitioners so that the client’s welfare remains the first priority. Ethical conduct affects every part of a massage and bodywork practice, including our choice of location, our appearance and the feel of our working space, our marketing and sense of competence in what we offer our clients, our policies and how we enforce them, and how we communicate with our clients during intake, informed consent conversations, and the work we do with them. This course is intended to offer a more solid grounding in ethics which is essential for any professional practice, and is in the best interest of the client, the best interest of the therapist, and the best interest of the profession.
We will arrange private tutorial classes for people who are interested in learning to work with family and friends. Whether you have a special needs person in your family, an elder who could benefit from informed touch, or just want to learn more about bodywork for your own personal growth, please feel free to contact us.
Cost is $25 per instructional hour (per student)
We will discuss what it is that you want to learn and decide length of class and how many classes make sense for reaching your goal. If you have someone you are interested in helping with bodywork, you can bring them as a practice person to work on in class, or we can provide a practice person for you. Couples who are interested in learning to work on each other are always welcome.
